Celebrate Maryland 250 in Downtown Frostburg
Our History
The Declaration of Independence was officially adopted by Congress on July 4, 1776. In 2026, the United States of America is celebrating this historic date for the 250th year.
Over the last two and a half centuries, the United States, a land stretching 2,800 miles wide and 1,528 miles long across the longitudinal line, has transformed into a land celebrating equality, ingenuity, diversity, and freedom. The American Dream means something different to each person seeking it, but the common theme of searching for greater opportunity, upward growth, and a full life is deeply rooted in the prominent message within the Declaration of Independence promoting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Through leadership, movements, and industrial powers, America has continuously worked toward and sought to become a democracy filled with civic engagement, parity, and global recognition for its achievements. Major events like the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Suffrage, legalization of LGBTQ+ rights, the implementation of Juneteenth, the Fair Labor Standards Act, Title I, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, and so many more large-scale progressions have defined what the United States stands for and implements for all its citizens’ prosperity.
Many defining parts of American culture come from Appalachia. For instance, the Appalachian Trail, which covers 2,197.9 miles across 14 states, has almost 17 million annual recreational visits and encourages exploring nature and conservation. In the midst of Appalachia, coal mines and industrial valleys set in Western Pennsylvania and the surrounding states amplified steel and coal production for the entire nation, ensuring success in the Industrial Revolution and the more recent Electricity Boom.
In Maryland, the National Road, which has been called the “Main Street of America,” originated in Cumberland, Maryland. It expanded both East and West, and today, it is connected with historic routes that go all the way to California. Now, the National Trails Highway, also called the National Old Trails Road, stretches from ocean to ocean.
Frostburg, Maryland specifically has a rich history, as it was established in 1812. From successful coal mining endeavors to the growth of Frostburg State University, the city has been a booming space on the National Road. In celebration of Maryland 250, the city is prioritizing local beauty, historical remembrance, and community as it always has.
